Stanford, Calif. - The Cardinal Women's sailors earned firstoverall at this weekend's Pacific Coast Championship. Although theregatta took place on their home water, there wasn't much of a homecourt advantage over the weekend. A low-pressure system stalled overNorthern California brought shifty southerly breezes to the RedwoodCity basin. Unusual for this late in the spring, the team rarely hasa chance to practice in these conditions. Speed and consistencyhelped the Cardinal women sailors to a convincing victory in the26-race series.
In A-Division, junior Liz Rountree and senior Julie Pitts had a slowstart, earning a 1,5, 4, 4 in their first four races. For race 5,Coach Kehoe subbed in Freshmen Evan Brown and Mariana Beardsworth whofinished the day with a 5, 1, 6, 1, 4, 5. These finishes left theCardinal A-Division in 3rd overall after the first day ofcompetition. On Sunday, Rountree and Pitts took the water to earn anamazing 1, 1, 3; and putting themselves in 2nd in A-Divsion.
Sailing in B-Division, Sophomores Carolines Young and Becca Levinstarted Saturday with a 2, 1, 2, 1 - and were able to continue thisamazing streak of finishes throughout the 13-race series. Strongerwind on Sunday meant Levin was subbed out for heavier crew AlexaBinns in races 11-13.
