Philadelphia, Pa - The Stanford women's 4 x 800 meter relay team raced to victory on Saturday at the Penn Relays.
The Cardinal team of Laura Mottaz (2:09.8), Arianna Lambie (2:07.8), Chinny Offor (2:08.9), and Ashley Freeman (2:05.5) ran to a school record time of 8:32.02. North Carolina finished second at 8:32.40.
"We knew if we stayed close to the front, we were going to get it done," said Ashley Freeman, who ran the anchor leg with a time of 2:05.5. "We were always there. "It was a matter of our pulling it out at the finish."
Stanford broke the previous school record of 8:32.26 set in 2001. "This is really a team of quarter-milers," said Cardinal women's head coach Edrick Floreal. "And there aren't any seniors on the team either, so a lot of people had to accept new challenges and new roles to be successful here. We're trying to put together a complete package so we can develop a championship team."
