Walnut Creek, Calif. - Stanford junior second baseman Jed Lowrie earned Pac-10 Player of the Week honors Tuesday for the week of March 29 - April 4. Lowrie, the Pac-10 Player of the Year and a First Team All-American in 2004, earned the honor for the first time in his career.
Lowrie hit .500 (7-14) in four games during the period, highlighting his week with the third two-homer game of his career in an 11-4 win at Washington State on April 2. He added two doubles, two homers, eight RBI, seven runs scored, four walks, three sacrifice flies, a 1.071 slugging percentage and a .524 on-base mark for the week. In addition, he fielded all 24 of his defensive chances successfully and took part in all five of Stanford's double plays.
For the season, Lowrie leads the team in homers (10, #2 Pac-10), RBI (38, #5 Pac-10), slugging percentage (.714, #1 Pac-10), total bases (70, #10 Pac-10), sacrifice flies (7, #1 Pac-10), runs scored (26) and walks (16, shares team lead) to go with a .337 batting average that is third on the club. Defensively, he has made just one error in 115 defensive chances for a .991 fielding percentage while starting all 26 of the team's games at second base.
His selection marked the 58th time a Stanford position player has been chosen for the honor in the history of the award.
No. 10 Stanford (17-9, 3-0 Pac-10) begins a five-game homestand by hosting Santa Clara (14-15) in a non-conference game this Tuesday, April 5 (6 pm, PT). Stanford will then welcome No. 16 Oregon State (24-4, 3-0 Pac-10) in a three-game early season showdown series between the only two Pac-10 teams without a blemish on their conference records this Friday-Sunday, April 8-10 (6 pm, 1 pm, 1 pm, PT) at Sunken Diamond.
