Walnut Creek, Calif. - Stanford junior righthanded pitcher Jeff Gilmore earned Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week honors Tuesday for the week of May 3-9. Gilmore, who has allowed just one run in 19.0 innings since becoming Stanford's No. 1 starter on April 22, won the honor for the first time in his career.
Gilmore was 2-0 and did not allow an earned run in 10.0 innings during two performances last week. He pitched the first 3.0 innings in an 8-0 shutout at UC Davis on May 2 and then tossed 7.0 innings without giving up an earned run in a 7-5 victory at California on Friday, retiring the first 13 batters he faced before California finally got its first hit and baserunner with one out in the bottom of the fifth.
For the season, Gilmore is now 8-1 to lead the club and rank tied for third in the Pac-10 in wins. He has also posted a 3.24 ERA (#7 Pac-10) and .233 opponents' batting average (#9 Pac-10) that are both the lowest among Stanford pitchers that have pitched at least one inning per team game played with the opponents' batting average being the lowest by any Stanford pitcher. In addition, Gilmore leads the Cardinal in innings pitched (86.0 IP, #4 Pac-10) and starts (13, #6T Pac-10, co-leader) and ranks second in strikeouts (63).
His selection marks the 69th time a Stanford pitcher has been chosen for the honor in the history of the award.
No. 21 Stanford (27-17, 8-7 Pac-10) plays the last of a six straight road games with a non-conference contest at Santa Clara on Tuesday, May 10 (6 pm, PT). The Cardinal returns to Sunken Diamond for a three-game home Pac-10 series against UCLA (11-33, 1-14 Pac-10 this Friday-Sunday, May 13-15 (6 pm, 1 pm, 1 pm, PT).
