Los Angeles, Ca - Erica McLain continued her sensational freshman outdoor track & field season on Saturday with a victory in the long jump at the 2005 Pacific-10 Championships at UCLA's Drake Stadium. Alicia Craig was Stanford's other winner with her third straight conference title in the 10,000 meters.

McLain, who had entered the conference championship with the third-best mark in the field, staged the upset with a winning effort of 21-2 1/2 (6.46m). That mark was a freshman school record, the second-best mark in Stanford varsity history and qualified her for the upcoming NCAA West Regionals at Oregon. League favorite Candice Baucham of UCLA finished the day with an effort of 20-7 3/4 (6.29m). Cal's Antonette Carter of California had the second-best mark entering the competition, but Carter finished fourth with a leap of 20-0 1/4 (6.10m).

McLain, who is the league favorite to win the triple jump on Sunday, became the second Stanford athlete to win a Pac-10 title in the women's long jump. Jackie Edwards won the conference title in 1992.

Later in the day, senior Alicia Craig, running in her first 10,000 meters of the 2005 outdoor season, captured the conference title for a third straight season in a time of 34:02.79 (NCAA qualifying time). It was also the fourth straight season that a Stanford athlete has won the Pac-10 title in the 10,000 meters. Besides Craig's wins in 2003, 2004 and 2005, Erin Sullivan won the league crown in 2002.

Thanks in part to ten points apiece by McLain's victory in the long jump, and Craig's victory in the 10,000 meters along with 21 points in the 3,000 meter steeplechase, the Stanford women's team leads the team competiton after day one with 61 points. Washington State is second with 54.5 points while league favorite UCLA is third with 45 points. The Cardinal men reside in seventh place with 25 points. Oregon leads with 63.5 points.

Several Stanford athletes not only advanced to Sunday's finals in their respective events, but also qualified for the upcoming NCAA West Regionals. The list included freshman Wopamo Osaisai in the 100 meters (10.45, freshman school record, #2 all-time at Stanford), Nick Sebes in the 400 meters (46.42), David Vidal in the 3,000 meter steeplechase (8:43.07), Jonathan Pierce in the 3,000 meter steeplehcase (8:50.14), Janice Davis in the 100 meters (11.50), Ashley Purnell in the 100 meters (11.68), Nashonme Johnson in the 400 meters (53.45), Jeane Goff in the 3,000 meter steeplechase (10:29.53), Amanda Trotter in the 3,000 meter steeplechase (10:36.73), Danielle Maier in the javelin (150-2, 45.78m, freshman school record), Ashley Purnell in the 200 meters (23.43) and Undine Becker in the 400 meter hurdles (59.65).
