Eugene, Or - Janice Davis' first place finish in the 100 meters and a victory in the 1,600 meter relay helped the Stanford women's track & field team to first place honors at the 2005 NCAA West Regionals on Saturday at the University of Oregon's Hayward Field.
Davis, who a day earlier ran a 11.47 (second-best in school history), ran to the individual title in a time of 11.61. Davis took a half-meter lead at 50 meters and held the lead to the finish.
The Cardinal women tallied 110.50 points to outscore runnerup UCLA which tallied 85 points. Only two weeks ago, the Stanford women's team captured its first Pacific-10 title.
Stanford ended the two day competition with a victory in the 1,600 meter relay. The Cardinal team of Chinny Offor (54.2), Ashley Freeman (52.8), Nashonme Johnson (54.3) and Janice Davis (52.3) ran a time of 3:34.73, second-best in school history.
The Cardinal have qualified 15 women for the upcoming NCAA Championships in Sacramento (June 8-11).
On Friday, Sara Bei, with her victory in the 5,000 meters for a third straight season, led a trio of Stanford women (Sarah Hopping in the discus, Teresa McWalters in the 5,000 meters) to qualify for the NCAA's.
In addition to Davis' victory in the 100 meters and the women's 1,600meter relay team win to reach the NCAA's, nine other Cardinal women qualified nationally on Saturday; Ashley Purnell in the 200 meters (23.45), Nashonme Johnson and Christine Moschella in the 400 meters (53.10 and 53.37), Ashley Freeman and Chinny Offor in the 800 meters (2:04.82 & 2:06.77 respectively), Arianna Lambie in the 1,500 meters (4:20.47), Jeane Goff in the 3,000 meter steeplechase (10:17.51), Undine Becker in the 400 meter hurdles (59.93) and Erica McLain in the triple jump (42-6 1/4, 12.96m).
The Cardinal men, which finished sixth at the West Regional with 51 points (USC won the team title with 103 points), qualified seven athletes for the NCAA's in Sacramento. The list started on Friday with Michael Robertson's first place victory in the discus, and second and third place finishes, respectively, by Ryan Hall and Ian Dobson in the 5,000 meters. Saturday's national qualifiers included freshman Wopamo Osaisai who finished fourth in the finals of the 100 meters (10.57), and Donald Sage and Russell Brown in the 1,500 meters. Sage finished second in the finals with a time of 3:44.69 while Brown tallied a time of 3:45.40 to finish fifth. Solomon Welch finished fifth in the triple jump (51-7 1/4, 15.73m).
The top five finishers in each event at the NCAA West Regional immediately advanced to the NCAA Championships. The next three finishers in each race are eligible for an at-large berth to the Championships. The top three relay teams also qualify for the NCAA's. At-large berths, based on season's best performances, will be announced Monday. The lone exceptions are the 10,000 meters and multi-events, in which athletes qualify directly for the NCAA Championship by meeting provisional and automatic standards. Ian Dobson and Brett Gotcher have qualified automatically in the men's 10,000 meters with times of 27:59.72 (#1 among collegiate runners) and 29:36.11, respectively. On the NCAA provisional list are Forrest Tahdooahnippah (29:36.11) and Neftalem Araia (29:32.83). In the women's 10,000 meters, there are two Stanfored NCAA automatic qualifiers, Anita Siraki (33:37.04) and Alicia Craig (34:02.79). Julie Allen has a NCAA provisional time of 34:36.97.
