Stanford finishes up its regular season play this Friday evening, April 21, at #9 San Jose State (#6 MPSF). After a heart-breaking loss against #3 UCLA last weekend, Stanford's record stands at 18-4 overall, 9-2 in the MPSF. The San Jose State Spartans hold an 11-12 overall record, 5-6 in the MPSF after their 5-2 loss to Cal last Friday. The match is set to begin at 4:00pm at San Jose State.
Stanford junior Katie Hansen took over the spot as lead scorer for the Cardinal last weekend after scoring two goals against the Bruins. She now holds 40 goals this season, only three goals behind her total last year. Following closely behind is freshman Lauren Silver with 39 goals. Scotti Shafer ranks third with 22 goals so far. On the defensive end, junior Meridith McColl holds all of Stanford's 181 saves. She has allowed only 97 goals in her 22 games played at goal this season. McColl, last year's Block 'S' Outstanding Sophomore Female Athlete award winner, is only nine saves behind her total for last season's 29 games.
The Cardinal have faced the Spartans once in 2006 at the Stanford Invite in February. The Cardinal took the victory, 13-5, in the semifinal round of the tournament. San Jose State comes off of an intense 8-7 double-overtime victory against #7 San Diego State the week before their loss to Cal last Friday.
Stanford will head into the MPSF tournament next Thursday, April 27, at UC Irvine. The Cardinal are ranked third in the MPSF for that tournament, with UCLA seeded second and USC holding the top-seed. Cal and Hawai'i are fourth and fifth respectively.
