Stanford, Calif. - Five Cardinal women's water polo players were honored with All-MPSF recognition, as announced by the conference office earlier today.
Freshman Lauren Silver was named the MPSF Newcomer of the Year. The driver was also recognized as a member of the MPSF All-Freshman Team and received All-Conference Honorable Mention. Junior driver Katie Hansen and junior goalkeeper Meredith McColl were named to the All-MPSF First Team, while junior two-meter player Christina Hewko was named to the Second Team. Senior driver Scotti Shafer rounded out the group of Cardinal honorees with All-Conference Honorable Mention.
Silver, a native of Long Beach, has led the Cardinal in scoring all year, standing now with 47 goals in 26 games. She scored a season-high four goals in Stanford's first match of the MPSF tournament against No. 7 UC Irvine. She also scored a goal against UCLA and two goals in the championship match against Hawaii. Silver attended Wilson High School in Long Beach where she was the second all-time leading scorer for her high school, was a four-time All-American, and named to the All-CIF First-Team for three years in a row. She was also named the Moore League Player of the Year in each of her last three years in school and twice named the "Dream Team" Player of the Year. Silver was part of the gold medal winning Junior National Team at the Junior Pan-American Games. Silver's mother, Kathy Drum, swam for the 1976 Olympic Team, was a World champion, and an American Record holder.
Silver, along with the other four Cardinal honorees, were key to the team's top finish in the MPSF Championships this weekend. Stanford now awaits seedings for the NCAA Tournament, which is set for May 12-14 at UC Davis.
