Stanford Now Set To Practice Twice Monday

Defense Impressive In Spring Game

April 28, 2007

The Cardinal concluded spring practice today with the annual Cardinal-White Spring Game in front of a few thousand enthusiastic fans at Stanford Stadium. While the offense managed to score four touchdowns in the two-and-a-half hour scrimmage, it was the defense that was most impressive as it recorded seven sacks, intercepted two passes and forced several three-and-out possessions. "I was pleased with the way we played defense today" said Cardinal head coach Jim Harbaugh. "It wasn't our best day offensively."

"The defense did a good job putting pressure on the quarterback," said Stanford's first year head coach. "I thought our blitz package was good and the tempo and timing was excellent. Offensively, we didn't throw the ball well today and our depth at running back was evident. But, overall, I'm real pleased with the guys who made it through all 15 spring practices. That was special."

The Cardinal offense scored four touchdowns in 25 total possessions. Redshirt freshman running back Tyrone McGraw, who carried the ball six times for 147 yards and touchdown, scored the game's first TD on an 85-yard run. McGraw, from San Francisco, also had runs of 23 and 27 yards. Fullback Emeka Nnoli capped an 8-play, 45-yard drive by scoring from a yard out.

In the second half, quarterback Tavita Pritchard connected on two touchdown passes, a 36-yarder to Stephen Carr and a 43-yard play to Kelton Lynn.

T.C. Ostrander, Stanford's number one QB, completed 19-of-36 for 164 yards and on interception while Alex Loukas was four-of-12 for 20 yards and an interception and Pritchard was four-of-11 for 114 yards and two TDs. "TC struggled a bit today," said Harbaugh. "But it's something for him to learn from."

Defensively, the Cardinal made several big plays, including seven sacks. Redshirt freshman Nick Macaluso had two sacks as the defense registered seven on the day. Nick Sanchez and Fred Campbell each recorded an interception, while the defensive unit was very active in accounting for a forced fumble, fumble recovery, pass deflections and several big hits.
