Eight Cardinal Earn All-Pac-10 Honors

Walnut Creek, Calif. - Stanford Baseball players Jason Castro, Erik Davis, Randy Molina, Cord Phelps, Sean Ratliff and Drew Storen were selected to the 2008 All-Pac-10 Team announced by Pacific-10 Commissioner Tom Hansen on Thursday. This is the second time Ratliff has been honored on the All-Pac-10 Team, but for the rest of the recipients it is the first time earning the honor. Brent Milleville and Austin Yount also picked up honorable mention All-Pac-10 status in 2008 for the first time at Stanford.

Castro led the Cardinal with a .369 batting average and also led the squad with 138 total bases, 86 hits, 59 runs scored and was second on the team with 56 RBI's. He also tied for second on the club with 11 home runs (with Phelps) and 13 doubles. Castro had a breakout junior campaign as the Cardinal starting catcher, with a .995 fielding percentage and threw out 27 of 68 runners attempting to steal base. He also was one of four players to start all 56 games.

Davis earned his first All-Pac-10 honor by pacing the team in wins (7), strikeouts (83), innings pitched (85.2), complete games (4) and starts (13). He threw four straight complete games in his first four Pac-10 starts and is also Stanford's active career leader in victories (14), strikeouts (172), innings pitched (205.1), appearances (70).

Molina earned his first All-Pac-10 honor by finishing second on the team with a .329 batting average and pounded out 56 hits on the season. Molina produced a .401 on-base percentage and drove in 37 in 2008.

Phelps had a big junior season and hit .344 on the year and started 52 of the 56 games. Phelps led the club with 35 walks and 62 runs scored on the season. He was also first on the team with 215 at bats and was hit by a pitch a team-leading four times. His 11 home runs are currently tied for second on the team (with Castro), and his seven steals are second-best on the squad. Phelps also made just five errors in 274 defensive chances for a .978 fielding mark.

Ratliff earned his second All-Pac-10 honor by hitting a team-high 18 home runs and also led the squad with 58 RBI's. The junior centerfielder also hit four triples on the season and hit .286 with a .373 on-base percentage. Ratliff led the team with a .633 slugging percentage and stole seven bases.

Storen had a big rookie season out of the bullpen and became one of the most consistent arms for the Cardinal in 2008. Storen posted a 2.89 ERA in 24 appearances this season and finished with 43.2 innings pitched and struck out 41 batters. He allowed just 39 hits on the season and gave up more than two earned runs in just two outings.

Milleville and Yount also put together strong seasons with Milleville finishing the season with a .324 batting average and nine home runs. Yount was put into the starting rotation midseason and responded with a 3.88 ERA in seven starts and won four games.

Stanford will open its postseason run in 2008 when they host UC Davis on Friday, May 30 at 5:00 p.m. Arkansas and Pepperdine are other two teams participating in the Stanford regional.
