ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Stanford center Jayne Appel became the eighth Stanford player to be named to the State Farm Coaches' All-America Team, State Farm and the Women's Basketball Coaches' Association (WBCA) announced Saturday. For Appel it is her first career All-America honor, and the 16th overall selection to the team for a Stanford player.

Appel was named to the 10-woman team in a press conference at the Renaissance Grand & Suites Hotel Saturday in St. Louis.

The selection marked the eighth consecutive year that Stanford has been represented on the State Farm (formerly Kodak) Coaches' All-America Team, as Nicole Powell represented the Cardinal from 2002-04 and Candice Wiggins became the school's only four-time All-American from 2005-08.

Appel, a junior from Pleasant Hill, led Stanford to its eighth Final Four appearance by performing as one of the nation's top post players, averaging 15.9 points and 9.2 rebounds per game and shooting 60.6 percent from the field heading into this weekend's Final Four. She posted 15 double-doubles and 30 double-digit scoring efforts on the year, highlighted by a Stanford school-record 46 points in the team's 74-53 regional final victory over Iowa State on March 30.

Her performance this year has resulted in a litany of honors, as Appel took home the Pac-10 Player of the Year award, was named to the All-Pac-10 First Team, earned second-team All-America recognition from espn.com and the Associated Press, and was named the Berkeley Regional MVP.

Stanford opens play in the 2009 Final Four Sunday night at 6:30 p.m. PT, taking on the Connecticut Huskies from the Scottrade Center in St. Louis. The contest will be televised live on ESPN.
