Stanford prospects playing professional baseball continued to show their talents around the country, with one player making quite the impression in his first at-bat in the majors.
Chris Carter, after getting the call from NY Mets to play right field, produced the go-ahead score in the Mets-Nationals game Wednesday night after the Mets trailed by five runs heading into the fifth. His first at-bat in the majors for the Mets had "The Animal" hitting a double in the eighth inning, worthy of a plate of shaving cream in his face following the game. Carter wasn't the only former Stanford hitter making waves in the majors. Right fielder Jody Gerut for the Brewers hit his first ever cycle in the majors in Sunday's game against the D-backs. Gerut was only the sixth player in Brewers history to hit for the cycle, driving in four runs for the 17-3 win. The accomplishment was even more impressive given that this was only Gerut's fourth start for the Brewers this season.
Former Stanford star pitcher Jeremy Guthrie overcame a disappointing showing against the Yankees last week to come back and pitch eight innings Friday night against the Indians as Baltimore's starting pitcher in an 8-1 decision. Orioles fans were concerned Guthrie was extending his slump from the Yankee start by allowing a two-out run in the first, but he turned it around and retired the next 16 straight batters for Cleveland, preventing the Tribe from extending its four game 10-hit streak.
In Triple-A Fresno, outfielder Joe Borchard continues to hit well, averaging .344 and driving in six runs in the past ten games, coming home seven times himself. Half of his hits during that span have been doubles.
Meanwhile, Sam Fuld continues to prove to be a dominant force for the Triple-A Iowa Cubs, hitting a stellar .353 over the past ten games and touching the bags at a .463 average. Fuld's three hits in four at-bats against Triple-A Oklahoma City helped Iowa defeat the RedHawks, 4-2.
For Drew Storen, things are looking up as he was called up to Triple-A Syracuse Chiefs as the pitcher in relief. His 1.35 ERA in his first five games for the Chiefs have helped Syracuse maintain its position on top in the International League North, with none of the five games leading to a loss.
