The Cardinal are making its 29th appearance in the NCAA Tournament and first since its 16th College World Series run in 2008. Stanford won back-to-back national championships in 1987 and 1988. The Lobos, Stanford's first round opponent, are making its second ever appearance in the NCAAs and first since 1962.

Stanford last played at Fullerton in an NCAA Tournament game in 2008 when the Cardinal swept the Titans and went onto the 2008 CWS.

“We're excited to return to the postseason,” said associate head coach Dean Stotz, who has been with the program as long as head coach, Mark Marquess, 34 years. “This is the second season and what we have been playing for all season. It should be a good regional.”

Kenny Diekroeger leads the Cardinal with a .351 average and has driven in 39 this season. Stanford starts four freshmen and features a pitching staff, headlined by starters Jordan Pries (4-3, 3.86) and Brett Mooneyham (3-6, 4.74) with a dozen underclassmen.

“Being a freshman, I really don't know what to expect (later this week),” said Diekroeger. “That's a good thing because all I need to do is focus on what it will take to win the regional.”
