STANFORD, Calif.-- Katie Jewett and Justin Doane were named national sailors of the week for leading the Cardinal to the ninth and final spot at the last weekend's dinghy semifinals in Seattle.

In a three-way battle for the final western spot into the 18-team national championships in June, Doane skippered Jewett to a first place finish in the tenth and final race in the "B" division, securing ninth place at the semifinal championship amongst 18 teams.

Doane, who took over the duties of skipper on day two after Peter Stemler became ill after day one, had to fight past Miami (Fla.) who led for most of the day, and hold off Eckerd College (Fla.), who along with Stanford and Miami were within striking distance of the final spot.

Doane was given a four-point cushion thanks to his "A" division team of Nick Dugdale and Hannah Burroughs, as Miami and Eckerd finished sixth and seventh to close out the meet. Stanford finished seven points in front of Miami (182) and 11 in front of Eckerd (186).

For the full team's accomplishments the Cardinal along with Kings Point out of the East, were awarded with the "grit award" given to the sailing team which finished ninth in each national semifinal.
