Stanford righthander Mark Appel was named Collegiate Baseball's National Player of the Week and also picked up the nod from the Pac-12 staff, as the conference's pitcher of the week following a 13-strikeout shutout of Utah last Friday.

On Tuesday he was named the Stanford Athletics Muscle Milk Athlete of the Week and the NCBWA National Player of the Week.

Stanford plays at Santa Clara at 6 p.m. on Tuesday.

Appel, who is 9-1 with a 2.45 ERA in 13 starts this year, hurled his first career shutout, limiting the Utes to four hits in the team's sweep. He is scheduled to throw against the Cal Golden Bears on Friday at 5:30 p.m. in his final regular season start.

The projected first round pick has struck out at least 10 in seven starts this year-- four against the top-10.

In the Pac-12, he has been even better, going 7-0 with a 2.12 ERA in nine starts. His .215 overall opponent batting average ranks third in the Pac-12. The last 10-game winner for the Cardinal was Jeff Gilmore in 2005, a streak of 12-straight years of double-digit win-total arms.

Also Nominated for Muscle Milk Athlete of the Week: Nicole Gibbs (women’s tennis), Bradley Klahn (men’s tennis), Patrick Rodgers (men’s golf), Cassandra Roulund (softball).
