DURHAM, NC-- Stanford righthander Mark Appel is one of 30 semifinalists for the Golden Spikes Award, given to college baseball's top player.
The three finalists will be announced on June 5 following the first round of the NCAA Regionals, which Appel is scheduled to start the opener against Fresno State at 6 p.m. at Sunken Diamond. The Cardinal, at 38-16 are the top seed in its regional, joining Pepperdine, Michigan State and the Bulldogs in the four-team double elimination tournament.
Appel leads the Pac-12 in strikeouts with 116 over 110.0 innings, going 9-1 with a 2.37 ERA.
Stanford has had 10 finalists in the award's 34-year history, a list that has included Jack McDowell (1987), Ed Sprague (1988), Jeffrey Hamonds (1992), AJ Hinch (1996), Jeremy Guthrie (2002) and Carlos Quentin (2003).
On Friday, July 6, the three finalists for the award will be at MLB Network’s studios for the presentation on The Rundown, which will feature interviews, video highlights and the announcement of the winner. The presentation will also be simulcast live on GoldenSpikesAward.com and MLB.com.
