STANFORD TENNIS – OFF AND RUNNING! It is always a surprise to return from Winter Finals and Spring Break to realize the bulk of the tennis season has passed. Only eight home matches (3 men’s and 5 women’s) remain, beginning with the women hosting Southern California rivals USC and UCLA on April 4 and 5, and culminating with the final home match of the season with our women vs. Cal on April 19. Our young men’s team continues to improve rapidly, and the women are eager to avenge early season losses to UCLA and Cal and once again challenge for the National Championship. Remember that admission is free for all regular season matches, so bring the family to watch the stars of tomorrow represent the Cardinal today. It is anticipated the women will host the Round of 64 and 32 of the NCAA Championships at the Taube Tennis Center on May 9 and 10, so save these dates and watch for further announcements in early May. (NOTE: There is an admission charge for all NCAA Championships). SAP Open Finals Feb. 24 – In an all-Stanford final, Scott Lipsky & Dave Martin upset World # 1’s Bob & Mike Bryan – 7-6, 7-5. Freshmen Alex Clayton and Ted Kelly and sophomore Richard Wire address East Palo Alto Tennis and Tutoring students in the Taube Tennis Center’s Koret Room on “Sleep Habits.”

The winter schedule was hectic as usual with lots of travel. Our semi final loss to Georgia Tech 4-3 at the National Team Indoors was a little short of what we were looking for but as usual it offered some great experience for our freshman! As we head in to April we have a great chance to secure yet another Pac 10 Championship but it will take some very tough wins over the LA schools and Cal at home as well as a trip to Eugene to take on Oregon! We feel that we are coming in to the form necessary as a team to make a great run in these last two months! Come out and see these huge matches and support our 3 seniors, Whitney Deason, Lejla Hodzic and Celia Durkin as they close out their careers on Saturday April 19th in the “Spring Smash” presented by ZOOM Marketing! Please also note that our rained out match with UC Davis will be made up on April 15th at 3pm and a rescheduled match with Sacramento State will now be played April 9th at 3pm as well! A very typical travel scene!

We have had a very exciting, and challenging winter quarter. Brandon, JJ, and I are pleased with the way we have competed in every match we’ve played. Our schedule has been very demanding, but we are improving every time we play. One of the highlights of the quarter, as always, was our trip to La Jolla for the 119th Pacific Coast Doubles Championships. Richard Wire, and “hometown boy” Greg Hirshman reached the quarterfinals. Also at this event a big “thank you” to Molly Thornton of La Jolla for the reception she held for the team at her home. It was a wonderful event enjoyed by all. Our Pac-10 season began with Spring break victories over previously undefeated # 15 ranked Arizona State, as well as Arizona. We have only three remaining home matches – St. Mary’s on April 8, followed on April 11 & 12 vs. Washington and Oregon. This home season-ending “Senior Weekend is presented by Cashin Company Realtors. Our regular dual match season ends in Berkeley vs Cal on April 19. The Pac-10 Individual Championships in Ojai, and the NCAA’s will round out our season. Thank you for all your support. Hope to see you at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium this season.
