STANFORD TENNIS – 2009 SUMMARY What a thrill to be present at the 2009 NCAA Championship for the final rounds in late May at the beautiful Texas A & M complex! It is a shame more of our fans could not be present to watch our men’s and women’s teams battle for the Championship. While not the favorites, both teams played well enough in extremely close losing efforts to merit considerable accolades. Their respective performances serve as a wake-up call to the rest of the nation that Stanford tennis is back. Our great coaching staffs and their teams can’t wait for the 2010 season to begin! 2011 NCAA MEN’S/WOMEN’S CHAMPIONSHIPS We are hard at work with the preliminary planning for the 2011 NCAA Championships to be hosted at the Taube Tennis Center. With your continued support, we can make this the best Championships ever. This is a “Can’t Miss” event! Watch for more announcements in the Fall . . . TEAM GUIDE The annual Team Guide was mailed bulk rate in late February to those supporters and former players on our mailing list. However, this is the final year it will be mailed universally to all. It continues to be available on line (www.gostanford.com). If you did not receive the guide this year, please let the Director of Tennis know, and one will be mailed to you. COACHSHIP ENDOWMENTS We remind you we are actively seeking significant help for endowing our head men’s tennis coaching position and our assistant women’s coaching position. Each of these “named” endowments represents an investment of app. $1.5 million, which may be spread over a five-year period. BANK OF THE WEST CLASSIC – July 27-August 2 The 13th Bank of the West Classic to be hosted at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium promises to be one of the best yet. Early commitments include Grand Slam Champs Serena Williams (10), Venus Williams (7), and Maria Sharapova (3), 2008 Olympic Gold Medalist Elena Dementieva, and 2008 ITF World Singles Champ, Jelana Jankovic. Individual Sessions, Full Week and Weekend Packages remain available. For more info:

In what proved to be a year of tremendous growth for a young and talented team that produced many highlights especially in the second half of the season, the end came too early after a 7-hour round of 16 match against Baylor at the NCAA’s!
We will take this year’s learning experience and with the addition of 3 freshmen including Mallory Burdette (the third and final Burdette sister), Stacey Tan of Lakewood, CA and Natalie Dillon of San Francisco, move forward and up the rankings! We will miss team captain Jessica Nguyen as she pursues a career in finance, and graduate Isamarie Perez as she moves closer to her goal of being a doctor. Best of luck to them both in their futures! Look for some of our players including Hilary Barte and others to participate this summer in the Bank of the West tournament to be played here at Stanford in late July. Thanks to everyone for all of your support this year! And a special thanks to Zoom Marketing, who celebrated their 10th year of sponsoring the Spring Smash with our women’s team. It was also special to have Frank Brennan back helping us so much, and we hope he will sign on again for another campaign! We look forward to climbing those rankings in a big way next year so get ready for some great fall action including the ITA Regionals at Stanford October 23-26, 2009. See you then. And don’t forget the annual Thanksgiving trip to Hawaii is moving this year to the beautiful Fairmont Orchid hotel on the Kohala Coast of the Big Island. If you would like information on this year’s trip and the tennis clinic which takes place from Nov. 23rd – 27th, please feel free to give me a call or email me about details. Clinic costs start at $1,000 for adults (with app. half of that tax deductible) to $3,200 for families of 5 participants. Lele
MEN'S COACHING STAFF FINAL NATIONAL RANKINGS TEAM SINGLES Doubles All Pac-10 Team All-American 2009 FALL SCHEDULE Oct. 5-11 D’Novo ITA All-American @ Tulsa, OK
We were very proud of our team this year. Although it didn’t quite end the way we wanted it to, we had an excellent season. In the NCAA tournament we hosted the 1st & 2nd round. We defeated Sacramento State in the 1st round, and a very good Pepperdine team in the 2nd round. We then traveled to College Station, Texas to play in the final sixteen. Our first match was against the eventual champion, USC. We had split our regular season matches. We knew it would be a tough match down to the wire. They beat us 4-2. Five of the singles matches went three sets. The effort was there; we just came up a bit short. Bradley Klahn, and Alex Clayton competed in the NCAA Individuals. Alex made it to the quarterfinals; he lost to the eventual winner in a very tight match. He was named an ITA All-American for the second straight year. We had a great Pac-10 Championship. Bradley Klahn won the singles title, and doubles with Ryan Thacher. By doing this, Bradley was named both the Pac-10 and ITA “Rookie of the Year” - honors well deserved. In the Pac-10 Invitational doubles, Greg Hirshman, and Jeff Zeller won the title. It was a wonderful way for Jeff to end his Stanford career. He has meant so much to this program over the four years he was here, being captain the last two years. One thing we were very pleased with was our academic performance this year. Winter quarter the team GPA was 3.65. Not only has the team done a great job on the court, but also in the classroom. We had six players named to the Pac-10 All Academic Team. Richard Wire, Greg Hirshman (1st team), Matt Bruch, Blake Muller (2nd team), Alex Clayton, Ted Kelly (honorable mention). We are looking forward to continuing the progress we made this year. We have four freshmen joining the team in September, Matt Kandath (New York), Denis Lin (California), Walker Kehrer (California), and Sam Ecker (Wisconsin). They all will be great additions to the team. We certainly will miss the seniors who are graduating, but we are very excited at the prospects of next year’s team. We hope you all have a wonderful summer. We’re looking forward to seeing you at the Taube family Tennis Stadium for the 2009-2010 season. John, Brandon, and JJ
