Stanford To Face Oregon Schools

On Friday, Oct. 31 at 3 p.m. Stanford and Oregon (4-12, 1-5) will meet for the first-time ever ... This is the first year the Ducks have fielded a women's soccer team ... On Sunday, Nov. 2 Stanford will face Oregon State (0-6, 2-12) at 1 p.m. ... Stanford holds a 4-0 advantage over the Beavers ... Last season, the Cardinal defeated Oregon State, 2-1 at home ... Emily Burt scored the game-winning goal off a pass from Ronnie Fair.

Last Time Out:
Stanford closed out the 1997 home season with a pair of wins last week ... Burt earned Pac-10 Player of the Week honors on Oct. 27 after scoring the game-winning goals in Stanford's victories over the Washington schools ... On Friday, Burt broke a 0-0 tie at the 90:48 mark, less than a minute into the first overtime period ... Her goal off a pass from Shauna Itri gave Stanford the 1-0 victory ... On Sunday, Burt scored off a pass from Tracye Lawyer at 89:22 to break a 2-2 tie and give the Cardinal a 3-2 victory over Washington ... Her goal was scored with 38 seconds remaining in regulation ... Senior Rita Hermiz recorded her first goal of the season off a pass from Ronnie Fair in the win.

Leading the Cardinal:
Burt is one of the top forwards in the west ... She leads the west region with seven game-winning goals ... Her 12 total goals ranks first on the team, second in the conference and fourth in the region while she ranks first on the team, third in the Pac-10 and sixth in the region with 28 total points ... She has recorded a goal or an assist in all eight of Stanford's victories this season.

Stanford Notes:
Lawyer has been solid offensively this season, recording 11 points on three goals and five assists ... She earned Pac-10 Player of the Week honors on September 8 after scoring two goals and an assist in Stanford's 5-0 shutout of Saint Mary's ... Freshman goalkeeper Carly Smolak has appeared in seven matches this season including five starts ... She has started five of Stanford's last seven matches ... With Smolak making an appearance in the net, Stanford is 6-1 ... Stanford is 4-1 with Smolak starting in the net.

Head Coach Steve Swanson:
Swanson is entering his second season at the helm of the Stanford women's soccer program ... He previously served as the head women's soccer coach and assistant director of athletics at Dartmouth College from 1990-95 ... In his first season on The Farm, Swanson led the Cardinal to a first place finish in the Pac-10 and a berth in the 1996 NCAA tournament ... The Cardinal finished the season with a 12-9-0 record, including a 6-1-0 mark in conference play ... Four members of Swanson's 1996 squad earned All-Pac-10 recognition while Erin Martin earned Pac-10 Player of the Year and All-American honors.
