Wake Forest Wins Stanford Nike Invitational
STANFORD, Calif. - Wake Forest (7-1) scored a pair of second half goals, to defeat Stanford (3-4), 2-1 and capture the Stanford Nike Invitational title. The four game tournament was played at Harry Maloney Field on the campus of Stanford University.
After a scoreless first half, Wake Forest's Stefanie Matthews scored two second half goals to give her team a 2-0 lead late in the match. At 82:45, Stanford's Shauna Itri recorded her first career goal off a pass from Elie Foster to score the final goal of the match.
In the earlier game, New Mexico (6-1) notched a pair of second half goals to defeat USF (4-3), 2-0. Laurie Hegedorn led the offensive attack, scoring two goals for the Lobos.
Wake Forest and New Mexico both finished the invitational with records of 2-0. Wake Forest captured the team title by winning the tiebreaker (goals for).
Stanford will return to action of Saturday, Sept. 27 when they travel to Santa Clara to face the Broncos at 7 pm.
