Professional Baseball Organization: Cleveland Indians (3rd round - 2008)
Professional Baseball Career: Was selected by the Cleveland Indians in the third round of the 2008 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft...played for a pair of affiliates during his first professional season...made a one-game debut for the Indians' club in the Gulf Coast Rookie League, going 0-for-3 with a sacrifice fly...was quickly moved to the Mahoning Valley Scrappers of the short-season single A New York-Penn League, where he hit .312 (44-for-141) with 24 runs scored, 10 doubles, two triples, two home runs, 21 RBI and four stolen bases in 35 games.
At Stanford: Finished his three-year Stanford career with a .307 batting average (165-for-537) with 115 runs scored, 31 doubles, seven triples, 13 home runs, 91 RBI and seven stolen bases in 156 games (139 starts)... ranks in Stanford's single-season top-10 for runs (t-6th with 76 in 2008)...posted a .952 fielding percentage while playing primarily second base, third and shortstop, with 29 errors in 605 total chances...batted .360 (18-for-50) with four doubles, two triples, two home runs and nine RBI in 13 career NCAA Tournament games.
As a Junior in 2008: Entered the year with no home runs and 33 career RBI, but hammered 13 homers and drove in 58 runs for Stanford's College World Series club...added a .351 batting average (91-for-259), 76 runs scored, 16 doubles, three triples, 13 home runs, 58 RBI and six stolen bases in 63 games (62 starts)...earned Stanford's Most Improved Player award...was an All-Pac-10 selection, and ranked among conference leaders in runs scored (t-2nd), hits (3rd), total bases (7th - 152), walks (7th - 41) and RBI (8th)...posted a career-best .975 fielding percentage (8 errors in 315 total chances), while he led the conference in assists and tied for fifth with 45 double plays...was a .352 hitter (31-for-88) batting right-handed, while logging a .351 mark (60-for-171) batting left-handed...hit .286 (27-for-70) with runners in scoring position...batted .357 (30-for-84) with five home runs and 23 RBI in 22 Pac-10 contests (21 starts)...showed a sign of things to come with two homers and four RBI in a February 22, season-opening win over Nebraska...tied his career high with four RBI on three other occasions - April 7 at California, April 11 vs. Oregon State and April 28 at Santa Clara...had a career-high four-hit effort February 26 vs. Nevada...had 31 multi-hit games overall, along with 17 multi-RBI contests...batted .516 (16-for-31) with three doubles and seven RBI during a career-high eight-game hitting streak from March 22-April 1...hit safely in nine of his 10 postseason games, going 17-for-44 (.386) with 14 runs scored, four doubles, two triples, two home runs and nine RBI...was named to the Stanford Regional All-Tournament team after homering in consecutive elimination games on the same day, June 1 vs. UC Davis and Pepperdine...led the team with six runs scored, and tied for the club high with five RBI at the College World Series, going 7-for-18 (.389) with two doubles and two triples.
As a Sophomore in 2007: Had a solid season, hitting .301 (56-for-186) with 29 runs scored, 15 doubles (second on the club), a team-high-tying four triples, 23 RBI, a team-high 22 walks, two hit by pitches, three sacrifice flies and one sacrifice bunt...one of three players who played in a team-high-tying 55 games with 49 coming in the starting lineup, splitting those starts between third base (22), shortstop (18) and second base (9)...ranked fourth on the club with 15 multiple-hit games, picking up five three-hit contests...had four multiple-RBI contests, including three twice...had a huge Pac-10 season, hitting .352 (31-for-88) with four doubles, one triple and nine RBI while playing in all 24 games (21 starts)...finished the season with a six-game hitting streak from May 19-27, going 12-for-27 (.444) with a double, triple, and five RBI.
As a Freshman In 2006: Hit .196 (18-for-92) with 10 RBI in 38 games played (28 starts - 16 at second base and 12 at third)...started in his collegiate debut February 5 vs. Cal State Fullerton, and went 1-for-3...collected his first RBI February 20 vs. Texas...posted a six-game hitting streak from February 24-March 11, going 7-for-20 (.350)...contributed a pair of multiple-hit games with one three-hit contest, as well as two multiple-RBI efforts...had not started since starting all three games of the Arizona State series (April 28-30) before making his first postseason start in the NCAA Austin Regional Championship Game against North Carolina State (June 4).
High School: Graduated in 2005 from Santa Barbara (Calif.) High School...chosen the 2005 Santa Barbara County Athletic Roundtable Athlete of the Year...earned 2005 first-team All-CIF Section and All-Channel League honors...named 2004 second-team All-Channel League...chosen to the 2005 All-Region Team by the Los Angeles Times...selected his team's Most Valuable Player in 2005, leading the squad to a 20-7 record and the 2005 CIF Section quarterfinals...in his senior year, hit a team-leading .415 with 24 RBI, 33 hits, 25 runs scored and nine doubles...also led the 2005 squad in hits, on-base percentage (.581), doubles and walks (24)...won his school's 2005 Scholar-Athlete Award...recognized as the "High School Top Performer" by the Los Angeles Times (April 16, 2004) and the Santa Barbara County "Male Athlete of the Week" by the Santa Barbara News Press (April 20, 2004)...graduated summa cum laude with a 4.83 GPA...was the class salutatorian...won the 2005 Bank of America Achievement Award as well as the 2005 Distinguished Don and 2004 Rensselaer Mathematics and Science Awards...earned National AP Scholar and National Merit Scholar honors...was a four-year Governor's Scholar (2002-05)...coached by Fred Warrecker.
Other Amateur Baseball: Made the 2006 New York Collegiate Baseball League All-Star team while playing for the Amsterdam Mohawks, hitting .276 (35-for-27) with a homer, 24 RBI and four stolen bases...played with the Santa Barbara City College Cowboys during the summer of 2005...selected to play with the 2004 St. Louis Cardinals scout team...spent the summer of 2003 with the Valley Heat...also played with the Santa Barbara Dons club team for three summers (2002-04).
Personal Information: Son of Cord and Lea Phelps...full name is Robert Cord Phelps...was born at Stanford Hospital and grew up in Woodside before his family moved to Santa Barbara...has two brothers, Kirk and Austin, and one sister, Nancy...chose Stanford because, in his words, "you can't beat the quality of the baseball program and the academics"...majored in human biology.
