No. 25 Stanford Scalps Aztecs, 97-50

STANFORD, Calif. -- Freshman Ryan Mendez scored 14 points to lead five players in double figures as 25th-ranked Stanford crushed San Diego State, 97-50, in a non-conference game.

Kris Weems and freshman David Moseley added 13 points apiece for the Cardinal (17-7), who improved to 9-0 at home. Weems scored 12 in the first half, helping Stanford build a 41-25 advantage at the intermission.

Chad Nelson led all scorers with 17 points for San Diego State (12-13), which has lost five straight and 10 of its last 11 games.

The Cardinal have won all three meetings between the intrastate rivals.

Stanford never trailed after Tim Young's layup made it 2-0 with 18:22 to go in the first half. But Jason Richey hit one of two free throws to lift the Aztecs within 8-7 before a timeout with 15:28 remaining.

The Cardinal scored the next six points to take control and extended their lead to 25-15 on a three-pointer by Moseley with 7:22 to go. Mendez sandwiched a pair of three-pointers, his only shots of the half, around one by Weems as Stanford closed with an 11-2 burst.

The Cardinal shot 50 percent from the field over the first 20 minutes, including 7-for-10 from three-point range.

San Diego State got within 14 points early in the second half before Stanford blew it open with a 10-0 run, opening a 55-31 cushion with just over 14 minutes left.

Cardinal coach Mike Montgomery started emptying his bench five minutes into the second half and 13 different players scored for Stanford, which shot nearly 56 percent for the game.

Richey finished with 10 points for the Aztecs, who were held to 33 percent shooting and outrebounded, 48-21.
