No. 21 Cardinal Destorys UNC-Greensboro in 49th State, 88-52

ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- Brevin Knight had 18 points, seven assists and four steals as 21st-ranked Stanford opened its season with an 88-52 thrashing of North Carolina-Greensboro in the first round of the Great Alaska Shootout in Anchorage.

Knight led four players in double figures for the Cardinal (1-0), who improved to 9-2 in openers under coach Mike Montgomery. Tim Young added 15 points, Kris Weems had 14 and Peter Sauer 12 for Stanford, which will play the College of Charleston Friday in the semifinals.

Knight moved past Matt Othick into ninth place on the Pac-10's all-time assists list with 553. Reggie Geary is eighth with 554.

Larry Gilbert topped North Carolina-Greensboro (0-2) with 12 points. The Spartans will play Arizona State in the consolation bracket on Friday.

Knight and Weems each scored six points in a game-opening 20-3 run and never trailed. The Cardinal shot 52 percent (13-for-25) from the field in the first half and finished the game at 50 percent (30-for-60), including 12-for-26 from three-point range.

The Spartans shot 36 percent (19-for-53) and were outrebounded, 41-24.
