Corey Benjamin Leads Beavers to Upset of No. 15 Cardinal, 86-77

CORVALLIS, Ore. -- Corey Benjamin scored 26 points, Ron Grady had 24 and Carson Cunningham added 18 to lift Oregon State to an 86-77 upset of number 15 Stanford in the Pac-10 Conference.

Oregon State (5-9, 1-4 Pac-10) broke its five-game losing streak behind Benjamin, who has 57 points in his last two games. It was the first conference win for the Beavers since a 56-54 victory over USC on March 2nd, 1996.

Brevin Knight had 16 points and eight assists before fouling out for Stanford (11-3, 4-2), which lost to Oregon State for the second time in the last seven meetings between the schools and fell to 37-64 all-time against the Beavers.

Stanford had its three-game winning streak halted and fell a game behind UCLA for the top spot in the Pac-10.

The trio of Benjamin, Grady -- who came off the bench -- and Cunningham combined for 68 of Oregon State's 86 points (79 percent). No other Beaver scored more than five points or took five shots.

Oregon State shot 52 percent (29-of-56) as a team, with the trio going 22-of-39 (56 percent). Benjamin was 6-of-9 from three-point range and Grady was 2-of-5 while Cunningham went 14-of-17 from the foul line.

Stanford built a 39-34 halftime lead behind Peter Sauer's 10 points, but Benjamin's three-pointer with 16:28 left gave the Beavers a 44-43 lead.

There were eight lead changes and four ties before Grady's running jumper with 5:29 left gave the Beavers the lead for good, 66-65. Benjamin followed with a dunk and Knight made two free throws before two free throws by Cunningham, a jumper by Grady and two more free throws by Cunningham opened the lead to 74-67 with 94 seconds to go.

Stanford center Tim Young was limited to five points, five rebounds and committed six of Stanford's 13 turnovers. The Cardinal, who got 15 points and nine rebounds from Peter Sauer and 14 points from Kris Weems, shot just 38 percent (23-of-61) from the field.
