No. 21 Cardinal Hands UCLA Worst Lost in School History, 109-61
STANFORD, Calif. -- Brevin Knight scored 20 of his season-high 25 points in the first half as 21st-ranked Stanford handed UCLA its worst loss ever, 109-61, in a Pac-10 Conference clash.
The 48-point margin eclipsed the worst previous loss in UCLA history, a 102-64 defeat at Arizona on February 18th, 1989.
Tim Young added 14 points and 10 rebounds for the Cardinal (9-2, 2-1 Pac-10), who bounced back from Saturday's one-point loss at Arizona and have won eight of their last nine games.
"It was just one of those games when everything went our way," said Stanford coach Mike Montgomery. "No question, we played extremely well. But we've all been there before. Brevin set the tone tonight. When he's shooting well, that's a great sign for us.
"We can't lose sight that this is one game," he cautioned. "I have tremendous respect for UCLA and their program. Sometimes confidence is gained despite a loss. That happened to us at Arizona."
Toby Bailey scored 14 points for the Bruins (7-4, 2-1), who shot just under 37 percent from the field. UCLA led the nation in shooting percentage at 54.9, but went 22-for-60 against Stanford and missed 10 of 23 free throws. The Cardinal also held a 45-26 rebounding edge.
"We were completely outclassed in all phases of the game -- offense, defense, rebounding," said Bruins coach Steve Lavin. "They got out of the gate early and really beat us to the punch. We got outrebounded. ... There are going to be nights like this, as I told my kids. We're going to improve. We did everything on our part to shut them down -- zone, man -- but they just kept executing. We just didn't match their intensity. We just ran into Stanford like a buzzsaw."
Stanford raced to a 17-1 lead, capped by an 11-0 burst that was helped by three of Knight's six three-pointers. The Cardinal hit a school-record 15 shots from beyond the arc and shot 56.5 percent for the game overall.
"We needed this win tonight, I just had to make the plays," Knight said. "I would do everything on my part in order for us to win. If it feels good, just shoot it. And that's what I did. I had confidence we would win, but no way by 48 points. The ball just went down for us and not for them."
UCLA closed within 24-12 with 10:37 to go, but Stanford answered with a 22-5 spurt to put the game away. Arthur Lee had a trio of three-pointers during that run, which ended with a pair of free throws by Young with just over five minutes left.
Lee had 13 points off the bench and Rich Jackson added 11 for Stanford, which shot better from three-point range than UCLA did overall. Thirteen different players scored for the Cardinal, who led at halftime, 57-26.
Charles O'Bannon scored 11 points and J.R. Henderson 10 for the Bruins, who had their four-game winning streak snapped.
