Sauer Lifts Cardinal Past No. 12 Arizona, 81-80
STANFORD, Calif. -- Peter Sauer hit a baseline jumper with six seconds to play, lifting 23rd-ranked Stanford to a critical 81-80 Pac-10 Conference victory over number 12 Arizona, moving the Cardinal closer to an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament.
Brevin Knight had 23 points and 12 assists for Stanford (19-7, 11-6 Pac-10), which has won six of its last seven games and avenged a one-point defeat at Arizona on January 4th. Stanford is 8-0 at home in the conference and has a chance to run the table when Arizona State visits on Saturday.
Michael Dickerson scored 22 points and Jason Terry added 17 for Arizona (19-8, 11-6), which had a three-game winning streak snapped. The Wildcats fell to 3-5 on the road against Pac-10 foes.
"Fans got their moneys worth," said Stanford coach Mike Montgomery. "This was vintage basketball. Brevin made a great play and Sauer answered his feed with six seconds to go. It was a great college game. Nothing is assured when you're talking about the NCAA Tournament. But right now, we're very, very pleased."
Arizona had a chance to win in the closing seconds, but Mike Bibby missed a running three-pointer from the right wing.
Bennett Davison had a tip-in to give Arizona an 80-77 lead, but Knight fed Tim Young for a dunk with 56 seconds left to slice the gap to one. Simon missed a shot and Knight penetrated the lane before sending a bounce pass to Sauer, who hit a 10-footer for the go-ahead basket.
"In the last timeout, we knew Brevin would drive the lane," said Arizona coach Lute Olson. "But we didn't put two men on him. We had a chance to throw the ball (to Sauer). We just didn't get him until he got into the lane."
Miles Simon gave the Wildcats a 73-68 lead with 6:21 to play before Stanford responded with an 8-2 run to go ahead 76-75 after Knight sank two free throws with 4:24 to go.
Simon tied the game with a free throw before Terry hit two of his own to put Arizona ahead 78-76. Knight made the first of two free throws, but committed a turnover after a steal by David Moseley. Davison missed a shot and Mark Madsen missed the front end of a 1-and-1 with 2:58 to play.
The Wildcats raced to a 21-10 lead in the first 6:37 as Dickerson scored seven points and Simon six. But Stanford responded with a 29-8 charge, keyed by eight points from Young, who gave the Cardinal a 39-29 lead with 3:58 to play.
Young finished with 22 points, 17 rebounds and five blocks for Stanford, which shot 44 percent (28-of-63) from the field. Madsen added 11 points off the bench for the Cardinal.
Davison scored 14 points and Simon finished with 13 for the Wildcats, who shot 40 percent (25-of-62) from the floor. Arizona was 8-of-17 from three-point range, with Terry hitting 5-of-7.
