No. 21 Cardinal Holds Off Late Rally to Defeat San Diego, 72-70

SAN DIEGO -- Kris Weems scored a career-high 18 points as number 21 Stanfordsurvived a scare and held off San Diego, 72-70.

Weems, a sophomore guard, had to pick up the slack for backcourtmate Brevin Knight, who was limited to 20 minutes because offoul trouble. Knight had 15 points and six assists.

Stanford (4-1) had a 10-point lead in the final two minutes, butSan Diego (3-4) scored 10 of the game's final 12 points as theCardinal faltered from the foul line down the stretch.

Sean Flannery scored 19 points for the Toreros, who were lookingfor their second win in as many all-time meetings with Stanford.San Diego beat the Cardinal, 79-70, in overtime in 1980.

The Toreros suffered their fourth loss in five games due mainlyto a 2-for-19 (11 percent) effort from three-point range. SanDiego shot 54 percent (21-of-39) from inside the arc.

In addition to Knight, the Cardinal played most of the gamewithout center Tim Young, who was limited to 12 minutes beforefouling out with two points and three rebounds.

Stanford missed 10 of 28 foul shots after entering the gamehitting 83 percent of its free throws.
