Carolyn Moos Diary #1 - 1/25/00
It was a good win for our team (Friday vs. Cal) - but with regard to oureffort it wasn't steady. We played a better first half than second as wemade far too many mistakes in the second half. We need to take care of theball better, and limit the number of turnovers off of offensive fouls, traveling, three seconds etc. We also can be more aggressive - which iscompletely an effort-related issue. But is was a good team win. Individually, I had a few fouls, two of which were not smart. That limited my time on the floor a littlebit. I need to rebound more and be aggressive without fouling. The teams' record is not to be the main focus as we know that we must come outready to play ALL the time and every team that plays us is likely to bringtheir best game. We have yet to get the scouting report about theWashington schools - but that will occur on Tuesday of this week as well asWed. We get a very descriptive report of what to expect and this helps toprepare mentally for the teams we have to face. We have to execute andplay Stanford basketball while playing to shut down their weapons.
With time comes experience and knowledge - you learn from each and everygame as well as practice and you can either take a step forward orbackward and I think our team is moving forward everyday. As long as weplay the best basketball we can play then it is satisfying - the losses thatcome from lack of execution, turnovers, lack of aggression etc. are notsatisfying and there is no excuse for that type of play. As a team we arefocused and are coming together each step of the way.
Rankings do not mean anything to me as they are just representations ofthe public's view of the potential standing of the team at a given momentin time - whereas the reality is how the team is doing according to themembers on the team and within the program. Besides, all that matters ishow all the teams are ranked at the end of a season - now that tells thereal story. The team feels the same way - and I know we all don't focus onthe rankings as it is just an uneccessary distraction.
My freetime is quite limited as we travel every other weekwhich often entails being away from Wed. to Sun. - so other than getting mywork done, sleeping, eating and training -which constitutes a lot of mytime - I enjoy all of that (don't get me wrong) but- i do try to havebalance with my friends- my teamates as well as others outside. I like toget out on campus and be with everyone- it is fun to go out with the wholeteam- dance etc. It's fun to dress up and also be a hard working, competitive, aggressive female athlete. I also like to draw with pastels, write poetry, listen to music and be with people. Our team has a lot ofsimilar interests and if fun to go out with- which contributes to ourchemistry on the court, too. I also like to support other athletes - myroomate is a swimmer, so I like to get out and see her when possible(which is only about 2 times a season) and I also make a point of gettingto all different sports from field hockey to cross country meets. I havefriends that play in all different sports and it is fun to see themperform and what they do best as I know how much time and effort goes intowhat they do. I also enjoy the beach, riding, outdoor stuff, the city butall these things wait until spring time or the summer when I have moretime.
Enjoy
