Stanford University women's basketball coach Tara VanDerveer joined an elite and prestigious group on Sunday, Nov. 26 when a 73-65 victory over Pacific made her just the 17th coach in Division I women's basketball history to record 500 career wins ... In 21-plus seasons on collegiate sidelines, VanDerveer is an amazing 504-147 (.774) ... VanDerveer reached another milestone in an 85-50 home win over Massachusetts on Dec. 3, as she recorded her 350th victory at Stanford ... In 14-plus seasons on The Farm, she is 352-96 (.786) and has led Stanford to two NCAA Championships (1989-90 & 1991-92), five NCAA Final Four appearances and eight Pacific-10 Conference titles ... VanDerveer has also guided the Cardinal to a 198-38 (.839) Pac-10 mark during her tenure ... The three-time National Coach of the Year has led Stanford to 11 20-win seasons in her last 12 years, including nine campaigns of 25 victories or more ... The Cardinal head coach entered this season averaging 23.7 victories, which is higher than 13 of the 16 other coaches who have reached the 500-win plateau ... Prior to coming to Stanford, VanDerveer was the head coach at Idaho (1978-80; 42-14) for two seasons and Ohio State (1980-85; 110-37) for five seasons ... In addition to her collegiate success, VanDerveer is also one of the most accomplished coaches in international women's basketball history ... She led the United States to the gold medal at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, and has compiled an 88-8 (.917) record with four gold medals and one bronze in seven international assignments. |
