Sophomore Jayne Appel (Pleasant Hill, Calif./Carondelet) of the Stanford women's basketball team was selected as the Stanford/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week for the week of Nov. 12-18.
Appel showed that there would be no “sophomore slump” in her future as she opened the first two weeks of the 2007-08 season in spectacular fashion. Over the Cardinal’s 3-0 start, Appel shot 61.5% from the floor, averaging 22.7 points, 13.0 rebounds, and 3.33 blocks per game. She posted her first double-double of the year with 18 points and 13 rebounds in Stanford’s 60-58 win over then-No. 3/3 Rutgers on Nov. 11, and this past Sunday, Nov. 18, put up career highs of 30 points, 20 rebounds, and six blocks in Stanford’s 81-77 double-overtime win at Utah. For her efforts, she was also named the Pac-10’s Player of the Week on Monday.
This is Appel’s first Stanford/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week honor of the 2007-08 season. Appel and the rest of the Stanford women's basketball team return to action Thursday, Nov. 22 as they take on No. 2/2 Connecticut in the opener of the 2007 Paradise Jam in the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Also nominated: Foluke Akinradewo (Volleyball), Tanner Gardner (wrestling), Meg Hostage (women’s swimming/diving), Robin Lopez (men’s basketball), Thiago Sa Freire (men’s soccer), Kristin Stannard (women’s soccer).
