Top-Ranked Stanford Suffers First Defeat of Season, 83-66
NORFOLK, Va. -- Nyree Roberts scored 19 points to lead a balanced attack asfourt -ranked Old Dominion knocked off top-ranked Stanford,83-66, handing Cardinal coach Tara Van Derveer her first losssince 1995.
Clarissa Machanguana and Ticha Penichiero scored 16 pointsapiece and Aubrey Eblin added 12 for the Lady Monarchs (8-1),who led 40-32 at halftime and pulled away in the second half,when they shot better than 65 percent (17-of-26) from the field.
Kate Starbird scored 17 points for Stanford (9-1), which hadextended its winning streak to nine games on Sunday with animpressive win at Tennessee.
Van Derveer's last loss came in the 1995 Final Four. She took aleave of absence as Stanford coach last season to serve as thecoach of the Olympic women's team. That sqaud went 52-0 on anexhibition tour and won all eight Olympic games as it roared tothe gold medal at Atlanta.
