Sports Medicine - Athletic Training

Our mission is to ensure the optimal health and performance of the Stanford student athlete through the continuous pursuit of new knowledge and application of best practices in the field of Sports Medicine.

In September 2011, Stanford Sports Medicine was rated #2 among the nations elite Sports Medicine Programs by Education-Portal.com. Under the direction of Head Team Physician and Director of Sports Medicine, Dr. Gordon Matheson, as well as Head Athletic Trainer,Scott Anderson, the Stanford University Athletic Training staff coordinates comprehensive medical services to 36 athletic programs and more than 900 student-athletes.

The 10 team physicians, who provide direct oversight to the Athletic Training staff, are faculty from the Division of Sports Medicine, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, in the School of Medicine at Stanford University. As well, the Sports Medicine Program has access to 40 consultants and specialists on its Sports Medicine Advisory Team.

In addition to the main Athletic Training Room in the Arrillaga Family Sports Center, the Sports Medicine Department operates two other satellite facilities located in Maples Pavilion and Burnham Pavilion. These facilities provide limited services and their availability is dependent on facility usage and seasonal requirements.

Located on the ground level of the Arrillaga Family Sports Center is the newly renovated, state-of-the-art, Phillip & Penelope Knight Athletic Training Room, staffed by 18 Certified Athletic Trainers. This full time staff provides evaluation, management, treatment, and rehabilitation of athletic injuries sustained by Stanford student athletes. Stanford Sports Medicine also employs two Athletic Training Fellows, four Graduate Assistant Athletic Trainers, and multiple Athletic Training Students.

Certified Athletic Trainers are highly qualified, multi-skilled, allied health care professionals and have been part of the American Medical Association's Health Professions Career and Education Directory for more than a decade. Additionally, the American Academy of Family Physicians, American Academy of Pediatrics and American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, among others, are all strong clinical and academic supporters of Certified Athletic Trainers.

During the academic year, the main Athletic Training Room will be open Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and on week ends and holidays, athletic competition and practices will dictate hours. During the summer months, the athletic training room operates on a reduced schedule.

The main Athletic Training Room's general phone number is (650) 723-1214. A message can be left at this number for any team athletic trainer. If you have an emergency after hours, please contact your team athletic trainer directly or call 9-1-1.

Through this organizational model, in conjunction with resources provided by Stanford Hospital & Clinics and the medical staff at the Stanford Sports Medicine Center, the Athletic Training staff at Stanford University delivers unmatched health care to its Cardinal student-athletes.
