Chris Derrick Named Stanford/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week

Sophomore Chris Derrick (Naperville, Ill. / Nequa Valley High School) of the Stanford men?™s track and field team was selected as the Stanford/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week for the week of May 10-16.

Sophomore Chris Derrick (Naperville, Ill. / Nequa Valley High School) of the Stanford men?™s track and field team was selected as the Stanford/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week for the week of May 10-16.

Derrick led Stanford to a third-place finish at the Pac-10 Championships in Berkeley over the weekend. The sophomore captured the individual conference title in both the 5,000 and 10,000 meters to score 20 points for the team. Derrick who missed the indoor season recovering from injury has shown he is back to the form that made him one of the top distance runners in the nation during the cross-country season.

Derrick opened the meet by winning the 10,000 meters on Saturday night with a time of 29:10.80. He led Stanford to a 1-2-3 sweep in the event with teammates Elliott Heath and Jake Riley. The following day, Derrick doubled to a Pac-10 title in the 5,000 meters, giving the sophomore two conference titles in the two longest and most grueling events of the meet. Derrick ran 13:43.69 to lead Stanford to a 1-2 finish with Heath.

Derrick has now won three Pac-10 titles this season, including cross country and will look to win his first NCAA title in the coming weeks. This is the second Stanford/Muscle Milk award for Derrick this year. He also earned the award after leading Stanford to the Pac-10 title in cross country, while also taking the individual honors. Derrick has now earned four Muscle Milk honors during his Stanford career.
