STANFORD, Calif.-- Stanford running back Toby Gerhart (Norco, Calif.) was named Stanford Athletics Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week following another stellar performance on the gridiron. It is his second-straight Muscle Milk honor and second-straight Pac-10 honor.
The Cardinal running back moved into second place all-time in career rushing with the third-best rushing performance of his career. In the dismantling of No. 11 USC, Gerhart rushed for 178 yards and three touchdowns as the Cardinal posted the most points ever by a USC opponent, in the team's 55-21 thumping of the Trojans. It was also his 17th career 100-yard game, breaking a stalemate with All-American Darrin Nelson at 16.
Gerhart, who leads the Pac-10 and ranks second nationally in rushing (139 yards per game) and touchdowns (19), is on the verge of toppling a few more Cardinal rushing records. He has tied a number of backs with four-straight 100-yard games, no Cardinal has rushed in five-straight games, and he has 35 career touchdowns, two away from Tommy Vardell's all-time record or 37.
The No. 14-ranked Cardinal (7-3, 6-2) host the Big Game with Bay Area rival, California, on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. at Stanford Stadium.
