Freshman Chris Derrick of the men's track and field team was selected as the Stanford/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week for April 27 - May 3. Derrick set the American junior record in the 5,000 meters at the Payton Jordan Cardinal Invitational with a time of 13:29.98. The time was also the sixth fastest in Stanford school history and a Stanford freshman record. Of the five who have run faster at Stanford, four have been U.S. Olympians.

Derrick battled with Oklahoma State freshman German Fernandez before pushing the pace over the final three laps to create the necessary gap. Fernandez also ran under the old record of 13:37.91 set by 2008 U.S. Olympian Galen Rupp. Both Derrick and Fernandez, who were teammates for the United States on the World junior cross country team, are still considered juniors because they will not turn 20 in 2009.

This was the second career Stanford/Muscle Milk honor for Derrick. He also earned a Muscle Milk honor during the cross country season. Derrick will next compete for Stanford at the 2009 Pac-10 Championships on May 16-17 from Eugene, Ore.

Also Nominated: Lauren Centrowitz (women's track and field), David Chung (men's golf), Brent Milleville (baseball), Olivia Morgan (synchronized swimming), Jamie Nesbitt (women's lacrosse), Missy Penna (softball)
