STANFORD, Calif. – Stanford women's basketball's Brittany McPhee earned #GoStanford Student-Athlete of the Week honorsfollowing breakout performances in the Battle of the Bay against California on Wednesday and Sunday.
After playing 142 total minutes and scoring 47 points in Stanford’s first 26 games, McPhee had a pair of eye-opening performances in the Cardinal’s 1-1 week against Cal. The Mount Rainier product averaged 16.5 points on 59.1 percent shooting (13-of-22) to go along with 6.0 rebounds per game in 29.0 minutes off the bench.
In Maples Pavilion on Sunday McPhee looked her most comfortable on the court. She scored a career-high 24 points to lead all scorers in a personal-best 36 minutes. The freshman made 10 of her 16 shots from the floor and almost single-handedly pulled the Cardinal back from a nine-point, first-half hole.
She scored 15 and made 7-of-10 in the opening 20 minutes with acrobatic finish after acrobatic finish. McPhee tied her career-high with six rebounds, became the sixth Stanford player to score 20 or more this season and the eighth different Cardinal to lead her team in scoring.
Her 24-point outing was the most for a Stanford freshman since Nnemkadi Ogwumike poured in 27 in the NCAA Tournament Second Round against San Diego State on March 23, 2009.
Called on to add energy and aggressiveness when Stanford faced a double-digit deficit at Cal on Wednesday, McPhee provided that and more, scoring nine and grabbing six rebounds in her most floor time since December, sparking her team to victory.
No. 19 Stanford (20-8, 12-4) closes out its regular season when it travels to Oregon for its only meetings of the season with the Beavers (Thursday, 6 p.m., Pac-12 Networks) and Ducks (Sunday, 1 p.m., ESPNU).
