  • McDermott won silver in 1968 at Grenoble and was seventh at Squaw Valley in 1960
  • Grandfather, Anthony, and father, John, ran middle-distance for Notre Dame
  • In high school, wrote a published feature story about community student-leaders who founded an organization in support of the Black Lives Matter movement
  • Received the Presidential Service Award for performing over 100 hours of community service
