Willingham was a recruiting assistant for the Cardinal during the 2015 season, and a volunteer defensive assistant in 2016.

He came to Stanford after serving as the tight ends coach at Menlo College in 2014.

Prior to those stints, Willingham coached at Skyline High School (Wash.) for five seasons. He held various positions, including two years as the junior varsity offensive and defensive line coach, one season as the varsity assistant linebackers coach and two more leading the varsity defensive line. In that time, Skyline won four state championships with a combined record of 65-7.

A graduate of Menlo College, Willingham earned his degree in psychology in 2016.

Willingham's father, Tyrone, was head coach at Stanford for seven seasons (1995-2001), and amassed a record of 44-36-1 with four bowl game appearances, including a Pac-10 title and 2000 Rose Bowl Game appearance.

Willingham and his wife, Rachel, were married in 2017.
