Hakon DeVries begins his second year as a volunteer assistant coach. He was a key member of the 2010 staff that saw seven distance runners receive a total of nine All-America honors during the year.
The 2010 indoor season was highlighted by All-America honors from Dylan Ferris in the mile and Elliott Heath in the 5,000. During the outdoor season, Jake Riley doubled to All-America honors in the 5,000 and 10,000 meters, while Chris Derrick (5,000), JT Sullivan (steeplechase) and Ferris (1,500) also received All-America honors for the men. On the women's side, Kathy Kroeger (5,000) and Stephanie Marcy (10,000) earned All-America status.
As an athlete, DeVries was a key member of the Stanford distance program. He was a two-time All-American in track and a major contributor in cross country. In 2008, DeVries was a scoring runner at all the cross-country championship races, helping the Cardinal to a third-place national finish.
Devries is also a volunteer assistant during the cross country season and assisted with the 2010 teams that swept the Pac-10 Championships. The Cardinal men won in convincing fashion, while the Cardinal women earned the title in the closet race in conference history.
DeVries gained his first coaching experience during the 2009 cross country season when he helped a Stanford men's team that was ranked No. 1 in the nation for nearly the entire year. He also assisted a young women's team that advanced to the NCAA Championships. As an athlete, DeVries. ran under three head cross country coaches during his time on The Farm. These coaches were Andrew Gerard, Hall of Famer Peter Tegen and current head coach Jason Dunn.
DeVries drew the praise of his coaches as an athlete for his leadership ability and hopes to transfer that into coaching, something he intends to pursue as a career.
He graduated with a bachelor of science in human biology in 2009. The Hopewell Junction, N.Y. native now resides in Palo Alto.
