Hakon DeVries begins his second year as a volunteer assistant coach. DeVries has been a key member of the Stanford distance program during his time as a student-athlete. He was a two-time All-American in track and a major contributor in cross country. In 2008, DeVries was a scoring runner at all the championship races, helping the Cardinal to a third-place national finish.
In his first season assisting the distance program in track and field, the Cardinal earned 10 All-America honors in the distance events. Stanford had All-Americans from 1,500 to 10,000 meters and Chris Derrick earned a pair of Pac-10 titles.
DeVries gained his first coaching experience during the cross country season when he helped a Stanford men's team that was ranked No. 1 in the nation for nearly the entire year. He also assisted a young women's team that advanced to the NCAA Championships.
As an athlete, DeVries. ran under three head cross country coaches during his time on The Farm. These coaches were Andrew Gerard, Hall of Famer Peter Tegen and current head coach Jason Dunn. DeVries drew the praise of his coaches as an athlete for his leadership ability and hopes to transfer that into coaching, something he intends to pursue as a career.
He graduated with a bachelor of science in human biology in 2009. The Hopewell Junction, N.Y. native now resides in Palo Alto.
