  • Because it was run on an oversized track, McGorty and winner Izaic Yorks did not get credit for the two-fastest times in American collegiate history.
  • However, they were the two fastest indoor times ever run by American collegians on any sized indoor track (and Nos. 3 and 4 among all collegians).

  • Anchored Stanford to two third-place finishes at the Penn Relays, in the 4xMile and distance medley relay.
  • Raced the 1,500 at the U.S. Championships, placing seventh in heat (3:49.94) and 25th overall.
  • USTFCCCA All-Academic team.
  • Pac-12 All-Academic second team.

Indoors

  • Ran a sub-4:00 mile in his first collegiate track race, running 3:59.34 to finish third at the UW Indoor Classic, behind only Olympians Matthew Centrowitz and Cam Levins.
  • Became the 426th American to run a sub-4:00 mile.
  • Ran only two individual races all season, finishing ninth in the 3,000 at the Husky Classic in 7:54.68.
  • Earned second-team All-America honors by anchoring Stanford's distance medley relay team to 10th place (9:50.50) at the NCAA Championships.
  • Anchored Stanford to second in the DMR at the Alex Wilson Invite at Notre Dame (9:29.34).

Cross country

  • Placed 20th at the NCAA Championships (30:41.9, 10K) in only his second meet of the season.
  • Earned All-America honors.
  • Was No. 2 runner on Stanford's NCAA runner-up team.
  • 13th at Pac-12 Championships (23:56, 8K) and No. 3 Stanford runner in season debut.
  • Named to the All-Pac-12 second team.

As a freshman (2013-14):
Outdoors

  • Redshirted, but competed and excelled in several races while running unattached.
  • Won the Brutus Hamilton Invitational mile in 4:00.35, a PR by four seconds.
  • Ran 13:37.64, which would have been second only to Chris Derrick among Stanford freshmen if not redshirting.
  • The time placed him sixth in the Payton Jordan 'B' race on his fast 5,000.
  • It was his first 5,000 race on the track.
  • Ran 1,500 PR of 3:44.82 while placing second in the second section of the Stanford Invitational.

Indoors

  • Finished second in the invitational 3,000 (7:59.11) at the UW Invitational while running unattached.

Cross country

  • An All-West Region selection after finishing 12th at the NCAA West Regionals in Sacramento.
  • Was No. 4 on the team in 29:57 (10K).
  • Was Stanford's No. 4 (161st overall) at the NCAA Championships (31:13.1) in Terre Haute.
  • Broke on to the scene by finishing fifth overall and No. 1 for Stanford in his collegiate debut, at the Pre-Nationals in Terre Haute, Ind., on Oct. 19.
  • His time was 23:38.97 over 8K.
  • While running unattached, was fifth at the Stanford Invitational and No. 3 among all Stanford runners (24:32, 8K).

 National/International:

  • Advanced to the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials 5,000 final, running 14:03.99 for 15th.
  • Won the North American, Central American, and Caribbean junior cross country title and led the U.S. team to victory on Feb. 22, 2014, at Mount Irvine, Tobago.
  • Won the 2014 U.S. junior national championship while leading Stanford to a 1-2-3 sweep of the 8K race (24:44) at Flatirons Golf Course in Boulder, Colo.
  • Fourth at the 2013 U.S. junior nationals in the 1,500, in 3:49.26.

High School:

  • Won the 2013 New Balance Outdoor Championships with a state record 8:45.61 for two miles in Greensboro, N.C.
  • Led wire to wire to win by nearly seven seconds.
  • It was the second-fastest two-mile in the country in 2013.
  • Won every cross-country race in 2012, except for a runner-up finish in the Foot Locker nationals in San Diego.
  • Among his victories was a state-meet record 14:47 over 5K to win the Virginia Group AAA title.
  • Repeated as the Virginia 3A champion in the 3,200.
  • Followed his 9:05.51 title-winning run in 2012 with 8:58.02 victory in 2013.
  • Ran 4:04.47 to set a Penn Relays high school mile record.
  • It was the No. 3 mile in the country in 2013.

Personal:

  • Majoring in management science and engineering.
  • Son of Kevin and Vicki McGorty, who both competed in track and field at North Carolina.
  • Father was a three-time Atlantic Coast Conference decathlon champ and competed in the 1988 and 1992 Olympic Trials.
  • Father coaches the multis, pole vault, and high jump at George Mason University.
  • Mother is the former Vicki Verinder.
  • Sean has younger brothers Ryan and Brandon.
  • Grandfather, Donald McGorty, competed in basketball and track at Manhattan College.
  • Uncles Chris and Dennis McGorty were collegiate track athletes at Maryland and North Carolina, respectively.
