Two-time NCAA team champion Janice Shin returned to The Farm as an assistant coach in September 2024 following a standout playing career with the Cardinal from 2018-21.
Shin was a key contributor on Stanford’s 2018 and 2019 NCAA championship teams, going a perfect 8-0 in postseason matches and earning NCAA All-Tournament Team recognition at No. 5 singles both years. As a freshman in 2018, she clinched NCAA victories in the second round (No. 17 Michigan) and Round of 16 (No. 1 North Carolina) and finished the year with 11 consecutive straight-set wins.
She was automatic again in 2019, delivering the Cardinal its record 20th NCAA crown, clinching a sweep of No. 2 Georgia in the final with a 6-2, 6-4 win on court five. Two of her other three victories in that postseason pushed Stanford on, clinching in the Round of 16 against No. 14 Kansas and again in the semifinals over No. 1 North Carolina.
Also in 2019, Shin paired with Melissa Lord in doubles to produce NCAA victories in the semifinals and championship despite not having played together in seven months. They were named to the NCAA All-Tournament Team at No. 3 doubles as a result.
In her first two seasons on The Farm before the 2020 and 2021 campaigns were impacted by COVID-19, Shin was 54-9 overall and 35-6 in duals. She earned a final ranking of No. 84 in 2018 and No. 95 in 2019.
An All-Pac-12 honorable mention selection in 2018, Shin was also a two-time ITA Scholar-Athlete (2020-21) and three-time conference all-academic awardee (2019-21) and graduated with her degree in science, technology and society. During her career, Stanford also won Pac-12 titles, both regular-season and tournament, in 2018 and 2019.
