Stanford has announced the hiring of assistant coach Kevin McCarthy ahead of the 2024 fall season. McCarthy joins a staff including the Knowles Family Director of Men's Soccer Jeremy Gunn and assistant coaches Ben Moane and Jack Winter.
Prior to Stanford, McCarthy served as the lead assistant at Cal Poly Pomona for three seasons. In each of his three seasons, the Broncos made the NCAA Tournament, including a second round appearance, third round appearance, and a National Quarterfinals appearance. In 2023, the team outscored its opponents 50-16, tying a program record for the best goal differential in a season. In total, McCarty's time at CPP saw 29 All-CCAA honorees, three CCAA Players of the Year, 14 United Soccer Coaches All-West Region honorees, and eight United Soccer Coaches All-Americans. Cal Poly Pomona's record during McCarthy's tenure was 39-10-15 (22-3-8 in conference).
McCarthy joined Cal Poly Pomona after spending three years as assistant coach for the Cal State University San Maros men’s soccer program. In 2019, the Cougars posted a 6-8-2 overall record and a 4-4-2 CCAA record in a season shortened two games by wildfires around Sonoma State and Cal State LA. It was CSUSM's second time finishing with a .500 record in conference play since joining the league in 2015. The Cougars' win over No. 25 Fresno Pacific to begin the season was the program's first win over a ranked opponent since 2016.
After starting the 2018 season with a 6-0 record, the Cougars made history by breaking into the United Soccer Coaches Division II Top 25 Poll for the first time as an NCAA member as the team took a No. 19 ranking. The team ended the season with an overall record of 8-7-2 (4-6-2 CCAA).
During his four years with Frostburg State, McCarthy helped the Bobcats to 34 wins, including a pair of CAC Tournament and two ECAC Tournament appearances.
Frostburg emerged as one of the top defensive teams in the nation in his final two seasons. In 2016, the Bobcats finished eighth in the nation in save percentage (.883) after ranking second nationally (.909) following the 2014 campaign.
In his first year, McCarthy helped lead the Bobcats to a 13-7 overall record that included a perfect 9-0 record at home. Frostburg advanced to the CAC Tournament semifinals and won the FSU Tournament, both for the third-straight season.
Prior to his time at FSU, McCarthy had several coaching stints at the collegiate level. In 2012, McCarthy served as the men’s and women’s assistant coach at Ave Maria University. In 2011-12, he was an assistant coach at Manhattanville College. He was responsible for recruiting, scouting, helping with team academics and assisted in event management. The Valiants finished 15-4-1 and appeared in the NCAA Tournament.
McCarthy received his first collegiate assistant position at William Smith College in the spring of 2011. He designed and assisted with training sessions for the women’s soccer team.
A 2011 graduate of Hobart College, McCarthy served as team captain and led the Statesmen to a 52-15-12 overall record with three appearances in the NCAA Tournament. He was a three-time Liberty League All-Academic honoree and garnered All-Liberty League Second Team honors as a senior in 2010.
In 2013, McCarthy played for and served as team captain of the Cape Coral Hurricanes of the National Premier Soccer League (NPSL).
McCarthy received his USSF C License in 2022, United Soccer Coaches Advanced National Diploma in January 2013, and MBA at Frostburg State in 2015. He and his wife Sarah have a daughter, Summer, and a dog Dolly.
