Dr. RUSSELL GAVIN is the Dr. Arthur P. Barnes Director of Bands at Stanford University. Gavin holds a Ph.D. in Music Education from Florida State University, a Master of Music in Euphonium Performance from the University of Notre Dame, and a Bachelor of Music Education from Auburn University. His public school teaching experiences include Director of Bands/Fine Arts Chair at Eufaula High School (Eufaula, AL) and Director of Bands at South Girard Middle School (Phenix City, AL).

Dr. Gavin maintains an active schedule as a conductor/clinician across the country. He has presented educational clinics at the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic, as well as the state music education/band conferences of Connecticut (featured clinician), Florida, Iowa, Kansas, Maine, Nevada, and Texas. He has presented research at multiple regional and national venues, including the MENC/NAfME Biennial National Conference, MENC/NAfME Summer Research Symposium, Texas Music Educators Association Conference, and the Iowa Music Educators Association Conference. Gavin’s publications have appeared in the Journal of Research in Music Education, the International Journal of Music Education, Psychology of Music, the Journal of Music Teacher Education, the International Journal of Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis, Southwestern Musician, and the Florida Music Director.

In addition to his duties at Stanford, Dr. Gavin is Corps Director of the Blue Stars Drum and Bugle Corps and an Educational Artist/Clinician for Jupiter Band Instruments.
