Nebraska Defeats Stanford at San Diego State Tournament

No. 4 Cardinal take early lead but fall in four to No. 5 Cornhuskers.

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The fifth-ranked Nebraska Cornhuskers defeated No. 4 Stanford in four games tonight at the San Diego State Tournament at Cox Arena. Game scores were 5-15, 15-9, 15-6 and 15-11.

The Cardinal dominated game one, with quick sets to the middle. Junior outside hitter Kerri Walsh contributed nine kills in the first game alone, as the team out-killed the 'Huskers 27-19.

But Nebraska came back to win the final three games, dominating at the net, recording 17 blocks for the match.

"We played streaky," Stanford head coach Don Shaw said. "We looked like a young team. I liked game one, but we struggled in games two and three. We had a bad start in game four, but we came back strong. I'm proud the way we battled at the end. We grew a lot tonight.

Sophomore middle blocker Jennifer Detmer finished with a career- and game-high 18 kills. Walsh finished with 17 kills. Sophomore setter Robyn Lewis recorded a career-high 56 assists.

Stanford still holds a 5-2 edge over Nebraska when playing on neutral courts.

Up next for Stanford is the No. 21-ranked San Diego. The team will then travel to the PowerBar Invitational in Boulder, Colo. New Mexico will be the first opponent, Fri., Sept. 11, at 5:30 p.m. The team will then take on either 12th-ranked Colorado or San Francisco in the Consolation or Championship match Sept. 12. Pac-10 conference play will begin when the Cardinal returns home to take on No. 3 USC at Maples Pavilion, Fri., Sept. 18, at 7:30 p.m. spacer.gif
