Stanford StoryThe big news so far is Stanford's #1 ranking in the pre-season ... The Cardinal generated 122 points in the NCAA poll, just ahead of defending NCAA champion Pepperdine and UC Irvine ... Both Pepperdine and UC Irvine are entered in this weekend's Southern California Tournament at Newport Beach ... The Cardinal will begin play in the tournament with a 8:05 a.m. game on Saturday against 13th-ranked Air Force ... Then at 12:25 p.m., Stanford will face fifth-ranked USC ... The Trojans lost in the NCAA title game to Pepperdine last year ... Stanford has already defeated two teams in the Top 15, seventh-ranked Pacific and #12 UC Davis ... Andy Walburger has taken the early lead in scoring with six points ... Walburger scored three times each in games at UC Davis and Pacific ... Two-time All-American goalie Chris Aguilera has already tallied 16 saves this year, including 12 against Pacific.

The Cardinal men's water polo team, ranked #1 in the pre-season, scored two victories last weekend to open the 1998 season ... Andy Walburger scored three goals in the first quarter to help key an early 6-1 Stanford lead as the Cardinal beat 12th-ranked UC Davis, 14-4, in the season opener for both teams on Saturday ... Walburger scored midway through the first period to give Stanford a 1-0 lead, and following a two-pointer from David Hay, added another with 2:40 left for a 4-0 Cardinal advantage ... Walburger's final goal of the opening period came with just ten seconds on the clock as Stanford led 6-1 heading into the second period ... Stanford added four more goals in the second quarter and led 10-3 at the half ... Brian Heifferon, Sean Joy and Hay each scored two goals for Stanford ... On Sunday, Walburger scored three points to lead Stanford to a 8-2 victory over seventh-ranked Pacific ... Six different Stanford players scored ... Heifferon opened the scoring for Stanford, scoring just 18 seconds into the game ... Walburger scored his first goal nearly six minutes later, as the Cardinal led 2-0 after one quarter ... Stanford scored four times in the second quarter to extend its lead to 7-0 at halftime ... Aguilera collected 16 saves in the two games, including 12 against Pacific.

Dante Dettamanti is in his 22nd year as head coach of the Stanford water polo program ... During his tenure on The Farm, Dettamanti has led the Cardinal to seven NCAA championships, four second place finishes, five third place finishes and one fourth place showing ... His teams have placed among the top four in the nation in 17 of his 21 seasons at Stanford ... His overall record at Stanford is 493-121-6 ... His 28-year coaching record, including stints at Occidental College (1971-73) and UC Santa Barbara (1974-76) is 589-182-6 ... He is one of only three coaches in NCAA water polo history to reach the 500 victory plateau.
