STANFORD, Calif. - Jamie Carey, a 5-6 guard from Thornton, Colorado, has signed a National Letter of Intent to play women's basketball at Stanford.

"We are thrilled Jamie has decided to join the Stanford team," said head coach Tara VanDerveer. "She is an excellent 3-point shooter and handles the ball very well. Additionally, Jamie is a positive person and a hard worker. She's a great addition to our program."

Carey was recently the captain of the Bronze medal-winning World Youth Games Team and was named one of the top juniors by USA Today, Reebok, Blue Star Index and was a 1998 third team Street & Smith's All-American. Last season she averaged 20.5 points per game, 6.8 assists per game, while shooting 84% from the free throw line. With those numbers, Carey was the second in the state of Colorado in both scoring and assists among 5A schools. Carey led her Horizon High School team to the state Final Four in 1997-98, was runner-up in 1996-97 and played in the Sweet Sixteen in 1995-96. In her three years, the Lady Hawks have posted a 57-11 record behind her over 20 points per game average in each season.

Not only is Carey an incredible athlete, but she is very accomplished in the classroom. She is in the running for class Valedictorian, has been on the 4.0 Honor Roll at Horizon High School for three straight years and has been listed in the Who's Who Among American High School Students in 1996, 1997 and 1998.
