Cardinal Rebounds with Rout of Cal
Men's tennis team remains unbeaten in Pac-10 play with 6-1 victory.
February 27, 1999
BERKELEY, Calif. - The 25th-ranked California men's tennis team fell to top-ranked Stanford, 6-1, Saturday at Hellman Tennis Center on the Berkeley campus. The Cardinal improves to 7-1 overall (3-0 in the Pac-10) while the Bears fall to 5-3 overall (1-2 in conference).
Cal started out with a strong effort in doubles play. After falling behind two games to none, sophomore Adrian Barnes and senior Chris Santoso came back to defeat the fifth-ranked tandem of Ryan Wolters and K.J. Hippensteel, 9-7, in the top slot. Sophomores Scott Kintz and Erik Dmytruk did not fare as well against the Cardinal's 29th-ranked pairing of Geoff Abrams and Alex Kim, losing 8-4. But Cal's No. 3 duo of Andrey Vinogradsky and David Tzou blanked Stanford's Scotty Scott and Ali Ansari, 8-0, to give the Bears the doubles point.
Unfortunately, Cal met a much more humbling fate in singles. Going up against a team that sported four nationally ranked players, the Bears were unable to garner a singles victory. Santoso was defeated by eighth-ranked Ryan Wolters, 6-1, 6-2, in the No. 1 match. In the No. 2 slot, Barnes fell to 37th-ranked Geoff Abrams, 6-3, 6-4. Stanford's K.J. Hippensteel dismissed Dmytruk in the third spot by a score of 6-4, 6-3. Kintz battled well in the No. 4 match but came up short against 40th-ranked Alex Kim, falling 6-3, 1-6, 7-6. Freshman Chris Lewis took his No. 5 match to three sets as well, but was eventually defeated by Scott, 6-2, 4-6 ,6-1. Vinogradsky lost the No. 6 match in straight sets (6-3, 6-3) to Ansari.
