Stanford to Host NCAA Baseball Regional

Cardinal opens postseason play on May 28 at 7 p.m.

STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford University will host an NCAA Regional at Sunken Diamond for the fourth consecutive year, it was announced on Monday. The four-team, double-elimination tournament will be held on Friday, May 28-Sunday, May 30.

The regional will feature six games, and a seventh if necessary, over the three days. The tournament will open with games at 3 and 7 p.m. on Friday and continue at 11 a.m., 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Saturday. The tournament final will be at 1 p.m. on Sunday, with a second championship game to follow at 5 p.m. if necessary.

Fourth-ranked Stanford (40-13), which earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament by clinching the Pacific-10 Conference title on Saturday, is guaranteed to open the tournament on Friday at 7 p.m. The 64-team field will be announced on Monday, May 24 at noon on ESPN. The other 15 regional hosts are Miami, Florida State, Wake Forest, Ohio State, Notre Dame, Alabama, Auburn, LSU, Arkansas, Houston, Baylor, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Wichita State and USC.

All-session passes go on sale beginning Thursday, May 20 at the Stanford Ticket Office, and are $35 for adults and $20 for children, seniors and students. Regional tickets will also be available at each of Stanford's final three home games - Thursday, May 20 at 6 p.m., Friday, May 21 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, May 22 at 1 p.m. Tickets can also be purchased by calling the Stanford Ticket Office at 1-800-BEATCAL.

Stanford will be hosting an NCAA regional for the eighth time (1983, '85, '87, '90, '96, '97, '98, '99, and fourth year in a row. This season marks the first of a new NCAA Regional format, however, with the expansion of the tournament from 48 to 64 teams. The old format of eight, six-team regionals has been replaced by 16, four-team regionals. The 16 regional winners will then face off in eight, two-team Super Regionals on June 4-6. Host sites for the Super Regionals will be determined on Monday, May 31. The eight winners of the best-of-three Super Regionals will advance to the College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska on June 11-19.
