STANFORD, Calif. - Third-ranked Stanford University (43-13) will take on Loyola Marymount University (33-26) in the first round of the NCAA Tournament for the second consecutive year, it was announced on Monday.

The four-team regional opens at Stanford's Sunken Diamond on Friday at 3 p.m. when second-seeded Nevada (36-18) takes on third-seeded North Carolina (40-16). The top-seeded Cardinal and fourth-seeded Lions will then meet at 7 p.m. The tournament continues with three games on Saturday (11 a.m., 3 p.m., 7 p.m.) and at least one game on Sunday (1 p.m.), with a second to be played if necessary (5 p.m.). The winner of the Stanford regional will advance to play the winner of the USC regional (Pepperdine, USC, Virginia Commonwealth and Harvard) in NCAA Super Regional competition on June 4-6.

Stanford is competing in the NCAA Tournament for the sixth straight year and 17th time in the last 19 seasons. The Cardinal was the top seed in the 1998 NCAA West Regional and fell to sixth-seeded Loyola Marymount 6-2 in the opening round.

The Cardinal advanced to the '99 NCAA Tournament by winning the Pac-10 title, while Loyola Marymount won the West Coast Conference's automatic bid by defeating Pepperdine 2-games-to-1 in playoff competition last weekend. Nevada received an at-large bid after finishing second to Cal State Fullerton in the Big West Conference, while North Carolina was ranked in the top 25 most of the season after a 16-0 start.

All-session passes for the regional are currently available at the Stanford Ticket Office or by calling 1-800-BEATCAL. All-session passes are $35 for adults and $20 for children, seniors and students.
